Become an Apprentice

Description:
The apprenticeship program is a 3 and a half to 4 year program with a combination of classroom and on the job training.
The Operating Engineer operates various types of construction heavy equipment: bobcats, backhoes, cranes, front-end loaders, graders, bulldozers, etc. Lubricates and maintains equipment. Needs to be able to identify when equipment is not functioning properly and make repairs to same. Applications are accepted on Fridays between 2:00 and 4:00 P.M.

Qualifications of Apprenticeship
Apprentice applicants shall be selected on the basis of qualifications alone and in accordance with objective standards which offer full and fair opportunity for application.

  • At least 18 years of age

  • High school education or a G.E.D.

  • Physically fit to perform work of the trade

  • Valid drivers license

  • Able to work long hours when required

  • Familiarity with construction is helpful

Most of the work will be performed outdoors.

The apprentice will receive increment wage rate increases based on a percentage of the journeyworker rate.

The apprentice will be required to attend training classes, most likely in the evenings and winter.

Condensed Work Experience:

Operation of various construction heavy equipment (Backhoes, cranes, derricks, draglines, bulldozers, front end loaders, trenching machines, bobcats)
Rigging
Operating signals
Use of grade instruments and grade stakes
Various machine repairs and adjustments
Welding
Care and maintenance of machines
Safety
